Wildlife Trafficking

Wildlife trafficking, also known as poaching, is an illegal business that destroys entire species of animals. Traffickers kill animals for their distinctive features in order to make money. Wildlife trafficking has been around for a long time, but has only recently started becoming a bigger problem as the payouts become larger. For example, “high-quality ivory sold for roughly $200 per kilogram”, and “[s]ome reports pegged the price of rhino horn in 2003 at $65,000 per kilogram” (Anderson 1). The major problems that are caused because of wildlife trafficking are the extinction of animals and the abuse to these animals in the wild. Wildlife trafficking is a problem in many different places, and part of the world has an effect on the other and the endangered species that are being targeted. The problems that exist are fueled by ideas of being rich and being healthy. There seems that there are many services that try to stop animal poaching, but there has been no major solution found. As of “March 3, 1973, 21 countries signed the Conventions on International Trade of Endangered Species”, which “established legal guidelines and a licensing and permit procedure for the trade of threatened or endangered wildlife, their products, plants, and derivatives” (“Wildlife Smuggling” 251).
